Snow in Upstate NY

I took these pictures this morning out our patio door. Winter is here and it is so pretty. I couldn't wait to get all my snow things on and take a walk with Austin (our dog)  the first thing this morning. I love the four seasons and how we get to enjoy each of them.

Went on a quilting retreat and then a sewing day

in

I am so tired today. Our quilt guild went on a quilting retreat that went from Fri morning to late Sunday afternoon. What a great time. I worked on Christmas stockings for my children, and grandchild, and a flannel quilt top, that used a panel and then I put scrap materical as a border around it. It really turned out great. When I got home I had to unpack and repack because another quilt group had a sewing day on Monday that went from 9:00 to 3:00. I did some more work on the stockings and it some satin stitch around the fusible parts, that is almost done. I wish I could post these items, but with Mike being admin and my daughter is also a member that would give the surprise away. So you will all have to wait until after Christmas. Then last night we had a quilt guild meeting that had a truck show that I did not want to miss. I'm all sewn out. It really was a great long weekend. Going to take it easy today, and enjoy the snowny day. Get my house back in order from being away, the wash is calling me, etc. Back to the real world.

I love the fall in upstate NY. This is a trail that is close to our house, that we enjoy walking with our dog. What is there not to like about our beautiful world. We took these pictures this past weekend.

Hi, Sue:

Thanks for the note.  I haven't been around for a while due to dealing with family issues and trying to spend more time with my mom.  The last year has been very difficult, and I haven't had the chance to do much quilting.  I'm hoping to catch up as time permits.

You mention making simple flannel quilts in your profile--do you have a specific pattern you recommend?  These sound like they would make nice Christmas gifts.

Take care--Donna

Donna,
I have a couple of books that use very large blocks, I think I wrote the name of the book with each quilt that I did. This is the best and easy way. Or even easier if you find a flannel panel and then put a border around it. Then I do some simple quilting, because most of the time this get dragged around. The kids love them for the floor and we love them for watching tv.

Hi Sue,

Thanks for your reminder.  It was perfect timing.  I wrote a blog about the blogs I'm writing on my own site about my Trip to Quilt Market and meeting Marie Osmond.

I need to go through this forum and see what you and everyone is doing.

Best,

Phyllis

Hi Sue, it's nice to meet you. Here, in Argentina, it's very difficult to quilt because of the lack of quilting materials. There aren't lots of people who love quilting here, I think because all of them who wanted to do it had to give it up!!. the fabrics are really expensive and there isn't variety; and it is impossible to find a store with quilting supplies, or even magazines or books.

However, I really love making quilts. I've met my quilting teacher, Veronica, this year. We are a group of 4 women (yes, It is hard for her to earn money only with her teaching classes). I know there is another quilting group in another city in Argentina. With my group, we have become good friends, it's nice to know people who share this kind of things. I'll show you some of the work that I've done.

I apologize for my poor english, it's a little bit difficult for me to express myself in another language.  But I'm really happy to meet you.

Sincerely from Buenos Aires,

Leila

The quilt club I belong to does this block exchange. You pay a $1.00 and get the pattern and one piece of material that is to be used in the block. Then you bring it to yhe next meeting completed and there is a drawing. Depending on how many people do the block, that is how many names are drawn. If you win you end up with about 12 blocks. As of today I have not won, maybe this month.

I took this class from Eleanor Burns class earlier this month, and just finished it. These are really not my colors, but I do like it. Eleanor calls this "Stars All Around'. It is done with her rulers now I have several from that class. All the material is from her new line. We had allot of fun, and she is wonderful. What a joy, I had always wanted to meet her, she is my quilting goddess!

I did this in a class where you put a very small piping in with the binding. The effect is wonderful, my does not stand out enough. Will have to try again.  I'm not sure if this is very clear so you can see it. Most likely I will give this as a gift for the holidays. I machine quilted it.

This quilt I'm having fun doing. I have to do 3 more half circles and I will then attach to the background and add some borders. I hoping to have this done next week.

Note cards

in

These were so easy to make. I was with a sewing group last week, and one of the woman, showed us these note cards. It is raining out, so the pictures did not come out well, because I had to use the flash and the inside lights. I hope you can see it well enough.

You cut out a motif that you like from your material (I'm a dog lover). Use a light weight fusible web. Fussy cut around the motif and then iron onto card stock. I took a colored pen and a little bit on the outside of the motif I draw lines, like quilting stitches around it. They are so cute, and easy. She thought this would be a great fund raiser item. It took me about 15 minutes to do both, very easy. Enjoy.

Need help

This is an old quilt, that my sister wants me to do something with. It was my great aunt's that she made. It has a lot of damage from old age, and a lot of love. The material is really faded. My idea is to make something with parts of the quilt that is still in good shape, and make several to give to the members of my family. Now the problem, what to do? I had some ideas, but nothing that is really working for me. One was to cut a part of the fan out put it with a picture of my great aunt and frame them. Then I thought, I could either make Christmas stockings or tree skirt. But most of my family have that covered. Then the idea of a table runner, but the material is so weak, I don't know how I would reinforce it so that it could be used and loved. One thing for sure, I don't want it to seat in a closet.

Have any idea's.?

I received this postcard from a good quilting friend to wish me will after surgery. She has an art background and the use of color is wonderful. I really looks great. I took a picture of the back so you could seet the stamp and the manual post mark. These are great projects.

I made this post card for my girlfriends birthday. Hopefully she won't see it before it comes in the mail. Phyllis in the forum wanted to see this card. I took a picture of both sides. I tried for the first time a blanket stitch around the edge, but it did not turn out very well. I like the zig zag stitch better, it covers the raw edges much better. You can only learn by trying. They are a lot of fun to do and receive.

Hudson River Valley Art Workshop / Quilting classes

www.artworkshops.com   This is a bed and breakfast that you can go for quilting classes. They also have art classes, etc. I went about 2 years ago, to take a class from Paula Nadelstern. It was great fun, the rooms and area are beautiful. A great room to have the class in, lots of light. This was the best place I ever took a class from. The food is out of this world, you will gain weight here. Fresh homemade cookies right from the oven for snack in the afternoon. This is near Albany, NY.
