What is your FAVORITE thing about quilting?

So, the question... What is your favorite thing about quilting...

Mine is the love displayed in the making and giving away of a quilt. A knowledge of the exchange of love that a simple (ok maybe not that simple) project can bring. Its laying wrapped around in it, feeling the warm fuzz from the fabric, and the wonderful supernatural ability of it to keep you just warm enough.  Its knowing that the love, time and pain staking attention to detail that went into making it.  Its a reminder of loved ones that will one day inevitably not be with us.  Its a family heirloom that if taken care of can last generations.  Its the sight of a new borne baby crib with a hand stitched quilt covering it.  Its looking at new quilts with a focused eyes, paying attention to every stitch, every peace of fabric, and every detail that makes it into what it is!  Lastly its provides me with the opportunity for me to follow my greatest love in my life, building advanced computer systems providing many people joy and the ability to produce quilts that will also one day bring joy.  Its knowing that my work is truly helping my fellow man (or woman) kind.  Essentially its mindfulness, awareness, love, comfort, and caring all wrapped into a simple blanket!

I want to know what your favorite thing is?  Is it making it, or are you like me and enjoy the art of quilting?

I love working with fabric!

I love working with fabric! Picking fabrics for a quilt is my favorite part. Then seeing if it looks like I imagined it. I love creating things I find beautiful. It is the process that I love. Giving them away or dispaying them on my bed is just a bonus for me.

My love of quilting

There are so many things that I like. The feel of the material as I work with it. The planning of what quilt to make next, the shopping in my stash, then the quilt shop to find the perfect material.  Making the first block to see what it will look like, because you never know if it will be what you want.  Putting the last finished block on the quilt top, and seeing the top done. I hate basting the quilt, but love to feel it with all three layers are together. Then if I'm hand or machine quilting to feel the change from a flat surface to a texture surface. Putting the binding on, is another thing that I don't like doing. It always seems to take forever. Then the last step either getting to use the quilt for the first time The joy of every time you walk in the room, it catches your eye. Or ,if you are giving it as a gift, the persons face what it lights up, because they know that alot of love was put in this gift. They seem to always take it , and give it a big hug. That is LOVE.  Now ,what to make next, and start all over again! Hooray

What I like about quilting

Hi:

I just joined the group--I guess we're all relatively new members!  I enjoy working with the fabric, like the others mentioned above.  My husband and I were on a short trip to Carlsbad (California) last week, and stumbled on a quilt shop there, and I just was really enjoying the feel and even the smell of the new fabric.  I enjoy fabric shopping with my quilting buddy, Cathy, and there are so many cute kid print fabrics available now, in cotton and in flannel.  One of the first quilts I made was not a particularly attractive quilt, but my younger son wasn't feeling well, and had wrapped himself in the quilt to lay down on the couch, and it was a really warm and loving feeling to see that something I had made myself was providing comfort to him.  I've made a couple of quilts that I've given away to charity, and it's a good feeling to think that these are providing the same comfort to a sick child somewhere.

FAVORITE....hmmm

That's actually a somewhat difficult question. Narrowing down to one FAVORITE thing...I clearly love shopping for fabric as my stash is taking over my office....in the closet, on shelves, grouped and ungrouped, color schemed, folded, unfolded....etc. I certainly love quilting books as my quilt book stash is growing almost as fast as my fabric stash.  I love making the first block....ahhh....and imagining the entire quilt when all the blocks are ready to assemble. Then watching the quilt grow as blocks are combined. Like Sue, I don't particularly care for the basting part of the process, although my cat, Sunny, absolutely loves joining in, pins and all. But having the layers assembled and seeing for the first time how the quilt looks as a whole is great...then onto the quilting and binding. Each part of making a quilt brings its own joy and feeling of accomplishment...right down to that final stitch of the binding. For me though, probably the best thing about quilting is the ability to forget the world around me and totally immerse myself in its creation from start to finish.
