As it grows

Here's the t-shirt quilt I discussed on another post.

This quilt uses the traditional quilt-as-you-go approach where the squares are quilted and then assembled into a quilt. Frankly, it's not one of my favorite techniques but for several reasons was the best approach for this quilt. My sister asked me to make this quilt for her daughter for her high school graduation. My niece played softball througout grammar, middle, and high school and as a result, had quite a collection of team t-shirts. However, she's a tiny thing and the sizes of those shirts varied widely. So, I had to improvise...would have been much easier to do this for a football player!

To stop the tshirt fabric from stretching, I ironed each onto fusible light-weight interfacing. For the backing I chose to use different color blender fabrics for interest. I outlined qulted all the logos and any graphics on each shirt. Then I assembled into rows using the sashing strip method.

In order to make the squares all the same size, I had to get creative within each block. So I chose a coordinating color and used whatever was necessary to make all the blocks the same size. Then between the rows, I added triangle blocks to try to distract from the mismatched color themes. I think it also added some interest to the quilt. It certainly made it unique.

It turned out great! I bet

It turned out great! I bet she loved it! I have a teacher friend that di the same thing with her t-shirts.

She does!

She knew I was making it but had no idea what it looked like until she got it. It was interesting to do because every square was so different. Used jersey fabric definitely was definitely challenging....grin. I do wish I had put wider strips between the squares so that it looked more in proportion (width vs length).

A great job

I like the whole quilt and the way you did the sashing, the colors are wonderful. Is she going to hang it on the wall or do you think she will use it on her bed? In my quilt guild some woman made this kind of quilt so the when the child go off to college they have something from home. Sending somthing that reminds them of the people that love them.
